| This is not a new
book. It was published eight years ago. But one of the great things about good
gardening books is their timelessness. Fads and fashions may come and go but
virtually everything you need to know - the basics of good gardening - don't change much
over the years. If you own only one primer for gardening in the Kansas City region
this should be it. Chapter One, "Where
We Garden", may be the best eleven pages of regional overview we have ever seen.
Here Ms. Snyder re-introduces the reader to the peculiarities of our climate, soil,
and weather. More importantly she also reminds us, in a very informative manner, why
we should not rely solely on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map in choosing and caring for
our garden plants. This is a lesson that all Savvygardeners understand.
Subsequent chapters cover in readable detail all the
important gardening topics including soil, lawns, flowers, vegetables, trees and
shrubs. Chapter Eleven, "Dealing With Adversities" can lay claim
as the single best chapter in the book. It is such a good read that we recommend
those who are too busy to read the whole book start with Chapters One and Eleven
and get to the rest as time permits. |
