The
next bit of magic will be the transformation of this pile of Kansas drystack
into the front yard garden we have been dreaming of. Kansas
drystack was chosen as it ties in nicely to the original stone foundation of the
house and is the same material used in our side garden. Ours was
supplied by Riverview Stone. Note the variety of sizes. When
building retaining walls it is important to use large stones at the base and
gradually decrease the sizes as the wall rises.
This
is heavy, hard work. Some of these stones weigh several
hundred pounds each. While much of this Front Yard Makeover
can be done by a skilled homeowner the stone lifting, sizing and
placement is certainly best suited for professionals.
Much of the
stone is used "as is", but some must be cut or carefully
broken to make the pieces fit together and form a solid, clean
looking wall. Again, for a project this size we highly
recommend professionals like Willco
Landscaping.
Once the wall
was finished it was just a matter of planting our Family
Tree Nursery trees, shrubs, and flowers. This was done in
conjunction with spreading the Missouri
Organic Recycling topsoil and cedar mulch. The results as
of Sunday June 30, 2002 are pictured below.
