Once the thermometer hits 50 degrees, the snow and ice are reduced to dirty gray residue, at least for the moment, and each mail delivery brings another dozen catalogs, the gardener who has spent a restive winter indoors, begins to fantasize about the vernal grandeur that lurks just around the corner for his or her own lawn and garden. Long before the first robin arrives, the garden show season has begun, adding a note of urgency to spring and summer planning. Many area communities sponsor lawn and garden shows and celebrations. All provide an opportunity for gardeners to see the latest ideas and introductions from commercial growers, plant services and landscapers. These shows also provide a showcase for the services of volunteer gardening organizations which are part of the County Extension outreach in both Kansas and Missouri. The Metropolitan Lawn and Garden Show was held at the American Royal Complex last weekend but you can still look forward to: the Olathe Home and Garden Celebration on the Mid America Nazarene University campus March 2nd and 3rd; and the Kansas City Home and Garden Show at Bartle Hall March 22nd through the 25th. Also look for as number of plant sales throughout the metropolitan area held by garden clubs, civic clubs and churches. In addition to your local newspaper, a good source of information on all these events is the locally published Kansas City Gardener available at many lawn and garden stores and by subscription. And it goes without saying keep in touch with Savvygardener.com! |
