Week of 12/2/02

As a special service to the community, and as K-State Research and Extension’ way of wishing everyone a happy holiday season, our colleagues, the Master Food Volunteers, are staffing a Holiday Hotline from December 9 to 24 from 11:00am to 5:00 pm.  They will answer questions on food service, preparation, preservation and food safety. Just call the Hotline number, (913) 764-6306, during these times.

The Extension Master Gardener volunteers, who staffed the gardening Hotline this past season, have been preparing for next year by reviewing our procedures and published resources and by updating the training we provide for our new volunteers.  They will carry on the Hotline tradition of disseminating research-based gardening and horticultural information to those who contact us after the Hotline reopens on March 1, 2003.  This past season, we answered questions from Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the eastern shore of Maryland, as well as a number from all over the Midwest.

We are proud of the more than 22,000 volunteer hours contributed by our Extension Master Gardeners last year, and the recognition our program received at the International Master Gardner Convention held in Florida.  We received the annual Search for Excellence Award for our biennial informational public garden tour of selected EMG’s gardens.

While the traffic on our gardening Hotline and visits from area gardeners continue, we have experienced a gratifying response to our Web sites.  One of the most popular offerings is our nationally recognized butterfly web site, available at www.oznet.ksu.edu/johnson , then go to the Butterfly page.   Last year 32 volunteers contributed 700 hours in butterfly education presentations, planning and special programs.  A question and answer format, in addition to numerous pictures of local butterfly and moth species, draws attention from across the country.  The site is used for training purposes by state university programs in Georgia and Florida.  Our most recent outreach in this area is a grant to Monarch Watch from the EMG Advisory Board to help fund Monarch butterfly research here and in Mexico.

On behalf of our EMG volunteers, we thank you for your patronage this past season, and look forward to being of service in the future.
