Week of 11/10/03 As we mentioned in last week’s article, with the arrival of November “What’s Hot on the Hotline?” has completed its metamorphosis into “Winter Wisdom for Gardeners”. This coincides with the annual closing of the telephone Hotline from November through February, until it reopens March 1, 2004. It is still possible to obtain horticultural and gardening information on the telephone at (913) 764-6300, as well as from the K-State website www.oznet.ksu.edu/Johnson , although Extension Master Gardeners will not be staffing the service during the winter months. This has been a busy season for the EMG volunteers who answer Hotline inquiries. Approximately 7,400 contacts were handled either on the telephone or in person over eight months of operation during 2003. It is interesting to note that a significant number of gardeners are accessing the K-State website for gardening information, and this complements the telephone Hotline very satisfactorily. Our annual report for 2002 indicated that hort/gardening page views online were accessed more than 14,500 times during the year. Preliminary statistics indicate a continuing growth in website popularity based on access reports. This represents one way in which K-State Research and Extension services are extending their outreach and the effective level of their community service. One of the most dramatic examples of technology serving the growing public interest and desire to obtain information is evidenced by response to a wealth of butterfly and moth data now available on our website. During 2002, this data was accessed by a total of more than 78,000 page views that were logged in this area of interest alone. This access is also notable not only for its volume, but for the fact that it comes from many other states and countries. Please keep watching Winter Wisdom for tips on protecting your garden and landscape plantings during the winter season. Don’t forget that the need for moisture continues throughout the winter, especially for newly planted material and evergreens, both cone bearing and broadleaf. Your diligence and attention will be rewarded in the spring and in subsequent growing seasons as well.
