September Rose Tips Discontinue dead heading roses by the 2nd week of September. It is another step for roses as they go into their dormancy period. Leaving the blooms on the rose bush, the petals fall to the ground and you will have rose hips. They can be very colorful on the bush. It is OK to cut a few for decoration but leave the remainder of the rose hips on the bush until you cut back old growth next spring. By now you should have soil fertilized your roses the last time this growing season. As I write this article, we are not having a lot of moisture. When our rainfall is short, water rose bushes one inch per week until around October 15th. Continue your spray program weekly as the cool nights and warm days invite mildew and blackspot. Use a good fungicide and follow directions on the container. September generally means cooler weather. This is a bonus as you should not be bothered with spider mites any longer.
