It must have been our mid-west charm because after an hour visiting the Conservatory and asking far too many questions we were invited back the next morning for a behind-the-scenes tour of the greenhouse and horticultural operations center.  According to The Bellagio it takes a horticultural staff of 130 people to make this all come together.

The Greenhouse
Conservatory and Greenhouse Supervisor Leah Moore took over as tour guide and we were on our way to what felt like the back-lot of a Hollywood movie studio.  This is where all the action really takes place to make the stuff the rest of see look so good.  Thousands of flowers arrive here weekly from all over with the majority coming from California.  The yellow bromeliads pictured below are a main feature of the current Chinese New Year Theme.  They are paired with their red colored brethren in the Conservatory.

This is certainly not child's play.  Keeping this many and varied plants and flowers alive and beautiful takes hard working dedicated personnel coupled with the precision provided by a computer controlled climate control system.  Virtually everything that can be automated has been including heat, humidity, light and water.

The next time you are in Las Vegas take a detour from the casinos and see the Bellagio's Conservatory and Gardens.  Even if you don't get the chance to go behind the scenes it will be a visit to remember.
