If you enjoy looking at exotic flowers -- and what gardener doesn’t -- you will get a chance this fall to visit the largest orchid show to hit the Kansas City area in more than a decade. Orchid societies from all over middle-America have been invited to display orchids in a friendly competition to see who can grow the best orchids. Hundreds of exotic orchids of all types will be shown in full bloom. A dozen orchid vendors also will be displaying and selling orchids of all types.

The orchid show will be open to the public Nov. 17 and 18 at Mid-America Orchid Congress at the

Hilton Garden Inn
19677 E. Jackson Drive
Independence, MO

The show is being hosted by the Orchid Society of Greater Kansas City.

The name of the show is the Kansas City Orchid Expo and Sale and the theme is “Orchids and All That Jazz” to give the show a Kansas City flavor. The orchid show is part of a three-day conference that will include talks by well known orchid experts and other activities for those registered for the full conference.

The public show part of the conference will give gardeners an opportunity to see what types of orchids are commonly grown by orchid hobbyists and to ask questions about types of orchids gardeners could start growing in their homes. Orchids on display include those that thrive and bloom easily on windowsills or under fluorescent light setups as well as the more hard-to-grow orchids that need humid conditions and brighter light offered by greenhouses.

The show will be an educational experience for gardeners who want to learn more about orchids. Visitors will be able to view first hand how a cattleya orchid differs from a phalaenopsis or paphiopedilum by seeing such plants in bloom. Cattleya flowers often have been used in orchid corsages. Phalaenopsis orchids, commonly known as moth orchids, are generally the types of orchids sold at large garden centers. Paphiopedilums are commonly known as slipper orchids.

The orchid displays will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 17 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 18. Admittance to the show is $5 but a $1 off savings coupon can be obtained at the show website www.kcorchidshow.org . Registration for all activities at the conference is $55 before Oct. 26 and $70 after that. Additional information about the conference, including registration forms, is available on the website.

The public part of the show will include vendors from as far away as Brazil and Ecuador offering orchids plants, supplies and jewelry. Orchids on display will be set up in artistic arrangements. Those who want to learn how to repot orchids can bring their orchid to the show and get it repotted for $5.

Experts say there are about 30,000 species of orchids spread among about 850 genera. New orchid species are discovered very year. For more information about growing orchids go to www.aos.org/aos/orchids/page01.aspx on the American Orchid Society website. The Orchid Society of Greater Kansas City offers beginner classes in orchid growing most months before the start of it’s regular monthly meeting. More information about that can be obtained at www.osgkc.org .
