Virtually every home, every property has an area that needs some extra attention.  Maybe it's where you stow the trash cans.  Sometimes it's just a neglected corner of the lot that's been conveniently ignored.  Whatever the case you'd be amazed at the effect of transforming that unsightly area into an attractive destination in your garden and landscape.

In the case of our patio makeover we started with a corner of the property that suffered from several common aesthetic shortcomings.

This is the view from the back deck. In addition to being home to the air conditioner unit and utility connections, this southeast corner of the property is also where summer grilling and meat smoking take place.  A small concrete patio serves as a reasonable area for cooking but provides no space for anything else. A Nikko Blue hydrangea is the only plant of substance in the area.  It does well here but is not in very good company.

For this makeover we called on Prestige One Landscaping of Kansas City.  Owner Roye Dillon put on his creative cap and came up with a plan that would serve several important purposes:

  • Maintain the space for summer grilling while creating an inviting area for a small gathering of guests.

  • Creatively hide the air conditioner and utility connections while leaving enough room to service them as necessary.

Roye Dillon observes, "Working in a small space while trying to accomplish several design and functional goals is a unique challenge.  As authorized Belgard installers and certified Aquascapes Designs contractors we felt we could create a pleasant and attractive gathering space with a small but substantial water feature."

Here are two more "before" images of the area in question.  Do you have a space that looks like this?

So, Let's get to work! First things first.  The existing area needed to be cleared and readied for the start of the project.  We agreed to do this part ourselves.  Mulch and leaves were raked away and the existing patio was removed.  Kevin even got a little help from the boys.

And this (below) is what we had prior to the arrival of the Prestige One crew.  Not much to look at but not a lot worse than it was before.

Next Week: The project comes together.  Follow the progress step-by-step as the patio, grill, and water feature come together...
